In fact, I tend to think that was deliberate - that if it had played more like something like Cybernator - play until you die, restart and try to make it further the next time and eventually beat the level - players would've potentially lost track of the thread of the story. The only criticism I might have of it is that the action parts of it tend to be a bit too easy, but I can forgive that.
